The nine-hectare Utrecht University Botanic Gardens are a riot of natural beauty. Explore the grounds of Fort Hoofddijk, including the massive rock garden, evolution garden, tropical greenhouses, and bird-watching cabin. A frog pokes its head above the water, butterflies and other insects flutter and crawl about to their hearts’ delight, and a tiny waterfall pours gently. There are six distinct gardens located in and around Fort Hoofddijk.

The Musical Clock Museum, or Museum Speelklok in English, is one of the more unusual but well-liked tourist attractions in Utrecht. It is devoted to music boxes, barrel organs, and other gadgets and instruments that can play music without the need for human intervention, aside from turning them on or turning their handles. The museum was founded in 1956, and its exhibits—many of which are interactive and hands-on—feature home instruments, ranging from tiny music boxes to enormous fair organs, most of which are still playable—as well as mechanical musical instruments from the 18th century to the present.
